In low lying areas, dams can cause flooding of large tracts of land, by destroying the human and animal habitat which causes change in life style and customs. Large amount of plant life will be submerged and destroyed because of generating greenhouse gases like methane. About 40 to 80 million people have been displaced physically by dams worldwide.
It is estimated that hydroelectric power plant produces 3.5 times the amount of greenhouses gases as a thermal power plant burning fossil fuels.
