Overcoming this challenge becomes the main conflict of the story. Parvana and her family must figure out a way to make a living without a man in the family. Since women are not allowed to walk in the streets unaccompanied, the family has to turn Parvana into a young boy in order to produce a living, and keep them all fed. Even though turning Parvana into a boy fixes the issue of hunger, without father their family still struggles to overcome the rest of life's challenges.
