an amphoteric compound is a molecule or ion that can react both as an acid and as a base. Many metals (such as copper, zinc, tin, lead, aluminium, and beryllium) form amphoteric oxides or hydroxides. ... Al2O3 is an example of an amphoteric oxide.

Amphoteric oxides are those oxides which show both acidic and basic behaviors and react with both acids and bases.
Example:
Al2O3 + 6HCl -> AlCl3 +H2O
Al2O3 + 2NaOH -> NaAlO2 +H2O
ZnO + 2NaOH -> 2NaAlO2 + H2O
ZnO + 2HCl -> ZnCl2 + H2O
