The muscle that is contracting is called the agonist and the muscle that is relaxing or lengthening is called the antagonist.In an antagonistic muscle pair as one muscle contracts the other muscle relaxes or lengthens. The muscle that is contracting is called the agonist and the muscle that is relaxing or lengthening is called the antagonist.
