A bacteriophage is a special kind of virus that attacks and lives on bacteria. The virus is named as bacteriophage meaning “bacteria eater”. It is believed that water in the River remains fresh because of the phagocytes in it that eats away the bacteria and kill the pathogenic germs which are the cause of pollution of water.

Bacteriophage is the prokaryotic viruses that solely infect and/ or destroy the bacteria. Bacteriophage were associated with the special property of river Ganges (Hankin, 1896; D'Herelle, 1917) and it always present in the water and can survive thousands or lakhs of years even without having food (Adams, 1959).
