cations are positively charged particles.

every atom has electrons in it's shells.
when an atom loses electrons it becomes positively charged.
metals always lose electrons so they are positively charged.

Cations are the positively charged ions.

To become stable and achieve complete outer shell configuration (octet or duplet), metallic atoms lose electrons. We know, that electrons are negatively charged...so on losing negatively charged electrons, the atoms become positively charged.

During electrolysis, these cations migrate towards the cathode for discharging.
