chromosomes are the functionalvunits in the nucleus of the cell that caries the information for the development and formation of the organism ,they are responsible for the heredity of the person and they transform the characteristics of an individual to the new generation
meiotic cell division is the property of cells through which gametes are formed these gametes are haploid in number i.e. they have half number of chromosomes(n)
humans have 46chromosomes in total as 23pairs(2n) so their gametes either male or female contains 23chromosomes (44+x or44+y)
during fertilisation the male gamete and the female gamete fuses together to form the zygote with the chromosome number as 46
