CLEANSING ACTIONS OF SOAP - most of the dirt is oily in nature and oil does not dissolve in water. the molecules of soap constitute sodium or potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acids. in case of soap the carbon chain dissolve in oil and the carbonic end in water. thus soap molecules form structures are called Micells. in Micells one end is towards the oil droplets and other end which is the ionic faces outside. therefore it forms emulsion in water and helps in dissolve the dirt and and we wash our clothes.....

The dirt present on clothes is organic in nature and insoluble in water. Therefore, it cannot be removed by only washing with water. When soap is dissolved in water, its hydrophobic ends attach themselves to the dirt and remove it from the cloth. Then, the molecules of soap arrange themselves in micelle formation and trap the dirt at the centre of the cluster. These micelles remain suspended in the water. Hence, the dust particles are easily rinsed away by water.
