These are the properties of dilute solutions which depend upon the number of solute particles irrespective of their nature. Some colligative properties are : relative lowering of vapour pressure, elevation in boiling point, depression in freezing point and osmotic pressure.

Colligative Properties:

The properties of solution which depends on only the number of solute particles but not on the nature of solute are called colligative properties.

Types of colligative properties:-

  • Relative lowering of vapour pressure
  • Elevation of boiling point
  • Depression of freezing point
  • Osmotic pressure

‡Note‡:

  • Vapour pressure is not a Colligative property.
  • (moles/molecules/ions/mole fraction)of solute particles and does not depend upon nature of solute particle.
