What is a compound? Explain

\huge\sf{\texttt{{{Required Answer:}}}}

♧ Compound ♧

A compound is a substance made up of two or more elements. For example, the compound of water is made up of the elements hydrogen and oxygen. The elements in a compound are chemically combined together in fixed amounts. For example, in water, the two elements hydrogen and oxygen are chemically cvombined together with two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.

♧ Components of Compounds ♧

Compounds are made up of atoms. However, a molecule is the smallest particle of matter that can exist independently.

♧ Molecules of a Compound ♧

When the atoms of two or more elements combine, they form a molecule of a compound. Some examples are as follows:

• A water molecule is formed by the combination of two atoms of hydrogen with one atom of oxygen.

• A molecule of carbon dioxide is formed by the combination of one atom of carbon with two atoms of oxygen.

♧ Formulae of Compounds ♧

The formula of a compound shows the number of atoms of different elements present in one molecule of that compound.

• The molecular formula of water is H₂O. So, a water molecule has two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.

• The molecular formula of carbon dioxide is CO₂. So, a carbon dioxide molecule has one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen.

The attached table presents the molecular formulae of some compounds and their constituents.
