They are like a glue. For example: There are 2 broken pieces of a vase, You take the glue and join them together forming a full vase. Similarly, if you take 2 sentences, for example: She looks very beautiful. And, She is very bad in behaviour. Then you take the glue  in a word form, for example: but. You get the complete sentence as:  

She looks very beautiful but she is very bad in behaviour.

The words underlined are known as conjunctions like the  word, 'but' in the above sentence.
