The plant which contains one cotyledon is known as monocot. The plant which contains two cotyledons is known as dicot

According to the number of cotyledons we can classify the plants into two categories.

1) Monocot plants : These plants have only one cotyledon . (mono means one)

On the other hand,

2) Dicot plants : These plants have two cotyledons. ( Di means two)

We can also classify the plants according to the further increasing numbers of cotyledons.
