Complex permanent tissue is defined as a collection of structurally dissimilar cells performing a common function or set of functions. They are made up of more than one type of cells. They are of two types xylem and phloem. Xylem is the chief water conducting tissue of the plants. It functions as a conducting tissue for water and minerals from the roots to the stems and leaves. Phloem is the chief food carrying tissue of the plants. It is a living tissue that carries food materials, from the place it is available to the places where it is needed.

The complex permanent tissues are also called as conducting tissues of vascular tissues because they are participating in the movement of different chemical compounds within the plant body. There are two type of complex permanent tissues

Xylem

Xylem are responsible for the transport of water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves of the plant and provides support to the plant. Xylem are divided into-tracheids, vessels, xylem fiber, and xylem parenchyma.

Phloem

It is also known as bast and responsible for translocates the prepared organic food from the leaves to different parts of the plant. Pholem composed of sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem parenchyma, and phloem fibers.
