Direct Speech refers to a dialogue being told directly to a person/a conversation between two people. It is always written under respective punctuation marks.

Example: Karissa said,"I bought a new dress for you!"

Indirect Speech/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person. When writing a sentence in indirect/reported speech, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'yesterday' changes to 'the previous day', 'this' changes to 'that', 'will' changes to 'would' and many other words will have to be made.  Punctuation marks other than a full stop (.) cannot be used. Commas (,) may be used if required.

Example: Karissa said that she bought a new dress for me.
