An electrolytic cell has three component parts: an electrolyte and two electrodes (a cathode and an anode). The electrolyte is usually a solution of water or other solvents in which ions are dissolved. Molten salts such as sodium chloride are also electrolytes.

"lone electrons normally can not pass through the electrolyte, ' instead a chemical reaction occurs the cathode, providing. electrons to the electrolyte: -in other systems ,the electrodes reaction can involve the metals of the electrodes as well as the ions of the electrolyte.
