This resulted in the formation of light elements: hydrogen, deuterium, helium (two isotopes), lithium and trace amounts of beryllium. Nuclear fusion in stars converts hydrogen into helium in all stars. In stars less massive than the Sun, this is the only reaction that takes place.

1. Hydrogen and helium, the first elements formed approximately 3 minutes after the big bang. This is because the formation of elements had to wait till the universe cooled down enough to allow their nuclei to capture electrons

2. So light elements are created when their nuclei are able to capture protons and neutrons

3. Common elements like carbon, nitrogen etc, are created in the cores of stars after getting fused with the lighter elements

4. Other heavy elements can be formed by nuclear fusion reactions within the lighter ones.
