Once the natural or synthetic rubber is mixed with pigments, vegetable oil, pumice, sulfur, and other additional ingredients, the mixture is heated and the erasers are formed. In order to make eraser plugs that will be attached to the ends of pencils, the rubber mixture is extruded and cut into plugs.

Erasers have a rubbery consistency and come in variety shapes and sizes. some pencils have erasers on one end. Less expensive erasers are made out of synthetic rubbers but expensive erasers are made up of vinyl, plastic or gum like material.
