Loudness is ear's strength to percept a sound whereas intensity is ear's sensitivity towards particular frequency contained in that sound. They both are related to each other but not exactly the same. Also loudness is called as amplitude of a sound whereas intensity is the rate at which power is transferred to a particular area.

Definition :

Loudness is the characteristic property by which can distinguish two sounds of the same frequency and pitch.

We can distinguish between a faint sound from a loud sound using the property .

Factors affecting loudness

  • Loudness is directly proportional to the square of amplitude .
  • Loudness is inversely proportional to the square of distances.
  • Loudness is directly proportional to the surface of a vibrating body.
  • Loudness is directly proportional to the density of the medium.

Loudness is measured in decibels.

A sound having more than 120 dB is considered to be a noise pollutant .

Intensity definition

Intensity is the rate of loudness which does not depend upon listeners and is of objective nature.

  • Loudness is subjective while intensity is objective.
  • Loudness of same intensity varies from user to user .
