An extremophile is an organism with optimal growth in environmental conditions considered extreme in that it is challenging for a carbon-based life form, such as all life on Earth, to survive. These organisms are dominants in the evolutionary history of the planet.

What are extremophiles ??

Answer

Prokaryotes which have the ability to grow in extreme conditions like volcano vents, hot spring and polar ice caps are called extremophiles. They have adaptations such as :

◇ Capacity to synthesise their food without sunlight and oxygen by utilising hydrogen sulphide and other chemicals from the volcanic vents.

◇ Some of them produce Methane (Methanogens).

◇ Some live in salty environment (Halophiles).

◇ Some are thermoacidophiles which thrive in acidic environments and at high temperature.
