age can be determined by carbon dating (using c14 isotope) and excavation (more deeper more earlier it would have been formed and vice versa)

1. relative method - the fossils found closer to the surface of earth are more recent than that which are found deeper
2. measuring the ratio of the isotopes of the same molecule of the element fossil
