Fossils are preserved remains or traces of animals,plants and other organisms from the past.Fossils are important evidence for Evolution because they show that life on earth was once different from life found on earth today.

There have been many disasters which took place on earth like volcanoes, earthquake, etc.
Many species of animals get buried due to these disasters .
Remnants and impressions of these animals still remain underground. These impressions are called as fossils.
Fossils are used to study the evolution.It is called as paleontology. It was discovered by Williard Libby.
One can check out the ratio of carbon 12 and carbon 14 and can find out the period of time passed of that fossil.
