Phases of mitosis. Mitosis consists offour basic phases: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Some textbooks list five, breaking prophase into an early phase (called prophase) and a late phase (called prometaphase).

The four phases of mitosis are prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
- Prophase is the first stage of mitosis that involves the condensation of chromosomes. The nucleus and other organelles disappear and the formation of spindle fiber occurs.
- The next step of mitosis is metaphase in which centromeres of the cell lie in the equator and thus result in the arrangement of the chromosomes in the equator.
- The next phase is anaphase in which the spindle fibers are attached to the chromosomes. These fibers pull the sister chromatids towards the pole and result in the separation of chromatids.
- Telophase is the last stage in which all the organelles reappear and the condensed chromosome is said to undergo decondensation.
