The elements which are in the horizontal line in the periodic table is called as a period.The elements in the verticle line in the periodic table is called as a group.

Consider the periodic table.

Periods

These are the horizontal rows. Left to right along a period, the atomic number increases, and atomic mass also increases (6 exceptions).

There are currently seven complete periods in the periodic table, labelled by the corresponding Roman numerals.

Groups

The vertical columns are called the groups. From the top to the bottom in a group, atomic number and mass increase.

There are 18 groups in the modern periodic table, which are numbered in two ways:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 ,13, 14 ,15, 16, 17, 18

or as

I A, II A, III B, III B, IV B, V B, VI B, VII B, VIII B, I B, II B, III A, IV A, V A, VI A, VII A, zero

In the latter case, the VIII B corresponds to the 8th, 9th and 10th groups.
