The heating caused due the passing of electric current through any material is called the heating effect of electric current. Eg, elecric heater. You can see this effect even in incandesent lamp. This is why they radiate heat alongwith light and thus consume relatively more electricity than CFLs.

Kernel of atoms in every conductor provides resistance to drift of electrons and this is called resistance. Resistance causes loss of energy of electrons (when it collides with Kernel of atoms) and this occurs in the form of heat. Current carrying conductor thus causes loss of electric energy as heat.

According to joules law,

P = I²R

Rate of loss in the form of heat is propotional to square of current passed through conductor.
