Hemoglobinopathies are among the most common inherited diseases around the world. They have become much more common recently in northern and central Europe, including Germany, due to immigration.
Hemoglobinopathy is a kind of genetic defect that results in abnormal structure of one of the globin chains of the hemoglobin molecule. Hemoglobinopathiesare inherited single-gene disorders; in most cases, they are inherited as autosomal co-dominant traits. Commonhemoglobinopathies include sickle-cell disease.
