Briefly speaking : hormones are chemicals or chemical compounds secreated by cells or endocrine glands like pituitary, adrenal and thyroid etc and directly released into blood stream.

Even cells which are not a part of any gland may also secreat but their action is limited to the same cell or near by cells E.g. Serotonin dopamine etc. Some people don't consider them as strictly hormonal in nature though they are neurotransmitters.

The classical hormones are roughly divided into amines , peptides , proteins and steroids depending on their chemical structures ( actually amine or peptide indicates its protein nature)

Most of them are in small quantities but extremely well controlled mechanism to adjusts to the needs of the given situation.

Some are water soluble and others fat soluble but all need a receptor cells to exert the action at the action site. These are present in all animals also. Their absence makes life impossible as homeostasis in the body and nervous system function wholly dependent on these substances.

This's a very brief account of the hormone sufficient for genaral public ; more detailed knowledge is a burden even to genaral physician or any doctor except to endocrinologist.
