Chemical indicators are substances which indicate the presence of an acid or a base in solution by showing a change in colour .
There are 3 types of indicators:

1)Acid base Indicators:These indicators are also known as pH indicators. These are substances which change colour with pH. These are usually weak acids and weak bases. eg of Acid base Indicator is Phenolphthalein, Phenolphthalein turns colourless in acidic solutions and shows a pink colour in basic solutions. Methyl orange is another example of Acid base indicators.

2) Olfactory indicators: These are substances which change their smell when mixed with acid or base. Onion is an olfactory indicator. When onion is mixed with an base it gives off its pungent smell, but with an acid it retains its pungent odour.

3)Natural indicators: Indicators obtained from natural substances are Natural indicators. Red cabbage, Turmeric , Litmus are all natural indicators which change colour in acidic and basic solutions.
