why phosphorus preserved in water

It is insoluble in water, but soluble in carbon disulfide. It takes fire spontaneously in air, burning to the pentoxide. ... White phosphorus should be kept under water, as it is dangerously reactive in air, and it should be handled with forceps, as contact with the skin may cause severe burns.

Phosphorus is kept in water this is because it is a high reactive non metal which reacts vigorously with Oxygen to form Phosphorus Pentaoxide P2O5 thatswhy it is kept in water so that it doesn't react.
