What are Indicators ? Explain types of indicators .
Indicators definition ➡
Indicators are substances that change colour when they are added to acidic or alkaline solutions.
Name of its type ➡
Although they may all be used for pH detection they are not all suitable for the same purpose.
- Universal indicator.
- Litmus.
- Phenolphthalein.
- Methyl orange.
- Bromothymol blue.
Explaintion of types ➡
1. Universal indicator --
A universal indicator is a pH indicator made of a solution of several compounds that exhibits several smooth colour changes over a wide range pH values to indicate the acidity or alkalinity of solutions.
2. Litmus --
Litmus indicator solution turns red in acidic solutions and blue in alkaline solutions. It turns purple in neutral solutions. Litmus paper is usually more reliable, and comes as red litmus paper and blue litmus paper
3. Phenolphthalein --
A colourless crystalline solid (pink in alkaline solution) used as an acid–base indicator and medicinally as a laxative
4. Methyl orange --
Methyl orange is a pH indicator frequently used in titration because of its clear and distinct color variance at different pH values. Methyl orange shows red color in acidic medium and yellow color in basic medium.
5. Bromothymol blue --
Bromothymol blue is a pH indicator. It is mostly used in applications that require measuring substances that would have a relatively neutral pH.
