What are Intercalary meristems? How are they different from Apical meristem ?

Meristematic tissue is further classified in the bases of there location and function.

  • Intercatary Meristem :- It is found at base leaf, leaf sheath of monocot, above the nodes or below the nodes. They produces buds which develop in axillary branches or axillary floral branches.
  • Apical meristem :- It is Present at the tip of stem, root and their branches. The function is to increase the length of the stem and the root.
  • Lateral meristem :- It is found in vascular bundles and known as cambium. The meristematic tissue, which may appear in most of digit plants, is known as cork cambium. It function is to increase the girth of the stems or roots.
