Ionic compounds are the substances containing ionic bond.
They are formed by transfer of electron between a metal and non metal.
As electro static force of attraction is present it is also called as electro static bond.
All ionic compounds conduct electricity when dissolved in water or when melted. they conduct electricity because they contain charged particles called ions.
Although solid ionic compounds are made up of ions but they do not conduct electricity in solid state due to fact that in solid ions are held by strong electro static force which makes ions not to move freely.

Ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten (liquid) or in aqueous solution (dissolved in water), because their ions are free to move from place to place. Ionic compounds cannot conduct electricity when solid, as their ions are held in fixed positions and cannot move.
