In relatively large amounts, the soil supplies nitrogenphosphorus,potassiumcalciummagnesium, and sulfur; these are often called the macronutrients. In relatively small amounts, the soil supplies iron,manganeseboronmolybdenumcopperzinc, chlorine, and cobalt, the so-called micronutrients.

Macronutrients and Micronutrients :

Macronutrients are those essential elements which are present in plants in easily detectable quantity is more than 1 PPM of plant body. macronutrients take part in synthesis of organic molecules and development of osmotic potential.

Six macronutrients are :- nitrogen , Phosphorus, potassium , calcium, magnesium and sulphur. While micronutrients are those essential elements which are present in plants in small quantities, less than 1 PPM or 1 mg per gram of dry matter. 7 micronutrients are :- iron, MN, boron, zinc, copper, molybdenum and chlorine.
