Methanogens are bacteria that produce methane gas.
These are used as sources of bio gas.

Methanogens use ethanoate as a substrate that may be derived from the decomposition of cellulose to produce methane gas.
CH3COO- + H+  → CH4 + CO2
Or They may use hydrogen and carbon dioxide produced by the decomposers to produce methane.
4 H2 + CO2 →  CH4 + 2 H2O

Methanogens grow and anaerobically on cellulosic material and produce large amount of Methane along with carbon dioxide and hydrogen .Since biogas is a mixture of Methane and carbon dioxide so, Methanogens helps in production of biogas .
