Microglia are cells found in the central nervous system of the invertebrates and vertebrates. Microglia are glial cells located all through the brain and the spinal cord.
Origin of microglia: these cells are mesodermal in origin, they originate from the yolk salk during the embryonal period and they are found in the brain mesenchyme.
Functions of the microglia:
The glial cells are migratory cells in the nervous system, acting as the first line of immune defence in the central nervous system.
The microglia are like macrophages engulfing foreign materials. Through the process of phagocytosis, the microglia clear dead neurons and cellular debris.
