Answer:

A molecule may be homonuclear, that is, it consists of atoms of one chemical element, as with two atoms in the oxygen molecule (O2); or it may be heteronuclear, a chemical compound composed of more than one element, as with water (two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom; H2O).

The smallest unit of matter which may exist independently is called as a molecule. Molecules are made up of atoms of elements. Atoms may form compounds of remain as their own respective elements. Elements and Compounds are both considered to be types of molecules. Elements have the atoms or only one element, while compounds consist of two or more elements. For eg: H2 is an element molecule made of Hydrogen atoms. CO2 is a compound molecule made of Carbon and Oxygen atoms.

Hope it helps.
