Natural resources are materials from the Earth that are used to support life and meet people's needs. Any natural substance that humans use can be considered a natural resource. Oil, coal, natural gas, metals, stone and sand are natural resources. Other natural resources are air, sunlight, soil and water.

  • These resources are formed without human intervention.
  • Natural resources can be renewable or non-renewable based on their availability.
  • The resources can be classified based on their availability as -

1. Renewable

  • Can be renewed or regenerated.
  • Available in sufficient amount in the nature.
  • Sustainable types of resources that are considered as environment friendly.
  • Example - Wind energy, Solar energy, geothermal energy.

2. Non - Renewable

  • Cannot be replenished once consumed.
  • Needs millions of years for formation.
  • Available in a limited amount in nature.
  • Exhaustible and less eco-friendly and are of high cost as compared to renewable resources.
  • Example - Coal, Petrol, oil.
