In xylem lignin deposition is uniform over the wall except for small porse, this porse are called pits. There are two types of pits viz., simple pit and bordered pit. A simple pit is just a opening in the wall. Whereas in a bordered pit the pit aperture is over arched by the projection of secondary wall.

The pit membrane is common to both pits of a pit pair and consists of two primary walls and a middle lamella or intercellular substance. Usually two types of pits are met within the cells of various plants, viz., simple pits and bordered pits.
