A plantation  is a large piece of land (or water) where one crop is specifically planted for widespread commercial sale and usually tended by resident laborers.

Plantations in sense during the British rule were wide areas of lands where specific crops were planted. The farmers and plantation workers were forced to plant what the colonial gov. would say.
