Ply, plied, or folded, yarns are composed of two or more single yarns twisted together. Two-ply yarn, for example, is composed of two single strands; three-ply yarn is composed of three single strands.

Ply yarn is the one made up with a single or more strand that is used on their own to make a plied yarn.
It is usually in terms of single but when the capacity of pulling off the fibre becomes visible then it started to wear out.
Other than that, when two or more layers are spun or interlocked then it becomes two-ply yarn.
