Polytypic means more than one type or form. Polytypic genera mean a genus with more than one form or, scientifically, more than one species. In other words, a polytypic genus is one that has two or more varieties of the taxonomic class of the next lower rank, i.e. Species.

Two different species of the same gnus usually arise due to events of natural selection.

Example: Rose (Rosa) is an example of polytypic genus. It has almost 100 different species.
