The Indian sugarcane industry is confronted with the following problems:

1. In India, nearly half of the total sugarcane production is diverted to Gur and Khandsari industries which causes a shortage of raw material for the industry. 

2. Majority of the mills are old and using obsolete machinery.


3.Management and labor problems further aggregate the situation, making the units uneconomic and sick. 

4.The sugar factories also face problem in disposing of the by-products like bagasse and molasses.

Sugarcane predominantly grows in the tropical and subtropical regions.

Other than sugar, products derived from sugarcane include falernum, molasses, rum, cachaça,bagasse, and ethanol.

Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of sugarcane as it produces an estimated 145.39 million tonnes of sugarcane, which is 41.28% of the all-India production. Sugarcane crop is sown in an area of 2.17 million hectares in the state, which amounts to 43.79% share of all-India sugarcane farming.

2Lack of the use of fertilizers by north indians and practising monocropping decreases the fertility of the soil,leading to less production
