Substances that influence the rate of a chemical reaction by improving the efficiency of the catalyst are called promoters.

For example, in the manufacturing of ammonia, iron acts as a catalyst and molybdenum as a promoter. Molybdenum increases the efficiency of the catalyst iron.

N₂ + 3H₂  <\------(iron + Mo)--------\ >   2NH₃

Note: In the absence of a catalyst, promoter alone cannot increase the rate of reaction.
