The pulmonary veins are the set of veins responsible for transporting blood from the lungs to the heart. It is the only veins in the body that carry oxygenated blood.

The pulmonary veins originate from the capillary networks of the pulmonary lobules and the last bronchial divisions. These branches converge towards the pulmonary hilum in number of four, two trunks parallel to the right bronchus and two others parallel to the left bronchus. They are voluminous, short veins and lack valves.

Through them, oxygenated blood from the lung is transported to the heart, leading to the upper portion of the left atrium. This blood reaches the heart after being oxygenated by the process of hematosis that is carried out by means of the blood-alveolar barrier in the lung. Then, from the left atrium, the blood goes to the left ventricle through the mitral valve and, leaving it through the aortic valve, it enters the aorta artery to be distributed to the rest of the body.

There are 4 total pulmonary veins.
