The basic difference between Purnima and Amavasya is that Purnima is considered to be auspicious whereas Amavasya is considered to be inauspicious. It is advised to do meditation on Purnima whereas Amavasya is considered to be the ideal night to perform Tantra Mantra and other demonic acts

Answer:

Pūrṇimā or Pournami or Poornima is the word for full moon in Sanskrit. This is the day in each month when the full moon occurs, and marks the division in each month between the two lunar fortnights, and the Moon is aligned exactly in a straight line, called a syzygy, with the Sun and Earth.

Amavasya is generally considered an inauspicious time except for the Kartik Amavasya which occurs on the day of Diwali.
