The settlement where man is engaged in primary activities and which lack basic facilities. A rural settlement is nothing more than a composite structure of house and roads. It is mostly inhabited by agriculturists. the population of rural settlement is very small. In India perspective, the number of inhabitants in a rural area is not more than 500. there is lack of facilities like roads, electricity, water supply and sewer system but all these facilities are gradually provided in urban settlement.
the developed settlement where basic facilities have been provided and which are advanced in term of standard of living and profession of man is called urban settlement . urban settlement is also a complex structure of houses and roads but it appearance quite different from that rural area. it is mostly inhabited by people who belong to secondary or tertiary profession like industry, trade , transport and services. the population of urban area may vary from a few thousand to lakhs and crores. due to attraction of employment and other opportunities , people have migrate from rural area to urban area.
