The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, which occurred approximately 66 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period, caused the extinction of all dinosaur groups except for the neornithine birds.

According to Russell, dinosaurs became extinct during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, 65 million years ago. He had wrote about it in the book called "Dinosaurs and extinction". He believed that instead of being extinct, they evolved into a more smarter or intelligente creature yet to be known off. Though other geologist took this idea very sleak.
