Saturated hydrocarbons have only single bonds between carbon atoms (in a carbon chain). These are also known as alkanes. eg. Ethane, Pentane, Decane, etc.

Unsaturated hydrocarbons have double or triple bonds between carbon atoms (in a carbon chain). These are known as alkenes and alkynes. eg. Butene, Hexene, Septyne, Octyne, etc.
