It's a nerve that carries sensory information toward the central nervous system.

Sensory nerves are bundles of neurons that assist with sensation and perception. They are able to accomplish this due to being afferent nerves - that is, they conduct information from the periphery to central nervous system. For example, mechanoreceptor nerves in your finger tips can detect pressure changes and communicate that information back to the dorsal ganglia of the spine, and then eventually up to your brain, which then processes these inputs into percepts- i.e. identifying something as smooth/rough, light/heavy etc.
