Short day plants (SDP) belong to a category called photoperiodism (effect of photo periods during daily duration of light hours and dark periods on growth and development of plant, including flowering). It is when the flower reaches a photoperiod or day length which is usually below a crictical period (continuous duration of light which should not exceed in short day plant and should always remain high in long day plants in order for them to bring a blooming flower out of it also known as critical photoperiod). Most of the flowering plants belong to this particular category, some of them, are, Xanthium (Coc.klebur), Chrysanthemum, Cosmos bipinnatus, Aster, Dahlia, Rice, Sugarcane, Strawberry, potato, tomato, soyabean and some other varieties.
Long day plants (LDP) also belong to the category of photoperiodism (definition with explanation given above) where the plants flower when they reach and receive long photperiods or light hours which is usually quite above or really high critical length or critical period (definition given above), some of the, are, Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger), wheat, oat, sugar beet, spinach (Spinacea oleracea), radish, barley, larkspur, lettuce and some other wide ranging varieties which shows they are long day plants.
