Significant Figures:
- The digits that are known reliable + the first uncertain digit are known as significant figures.
Common rules for significant figures:
1). All non-zero digits are S.F.
Example:
- 786 = 3 Significant figures.
- 420 = 3 Significant figures.
2). All zero occur between two non-zero digits are also significant.
Example:
- 1006 = 4 Significant figures.
- 2007 = 4 Significant figures.
3). If the number is less than 1 the zero on the right of decimal point and to the left of 1st non zero digit are not significant.
Example:
- 0.00072 = 2 Significant figures.
- 0.00702 = 3 Significant figures.
4). If a number without a decimal point the terminal or trailing zero are not significant.
Example:
- 2170 meter = 3 Significant figures.
5). Change in units does not change the number of Significant figures in a measurement.
Example:
- 123 m = 12300 cm = 3 Significant figures.
